Welcome to the Town of Canisteo

Welcome to the official website of the Town of Canisteo New York. The town is located in the west central part of Steuben County.
Our Town is situated in the valley with the same name; Canisteo derives from the Seneca Language and translates roughly to “Board on the Water”. The Town of Canisteo was first settled in 1789 and officially became a town in 1796 when Steuben County was broken off from Ontario County. A pristine valley with its tributaries, the town total area is 54.4 square miles and is a welcoming community know for it’s beauty, with hills that reach between 1,700 to 2,200 feet. Having plenty of hunting and farmland.
Our town government strives to make our community a place where it’s residents feel safe and enjoy the beauty and recreational opportunities the town has to offer.
